Reception: Spring 1 2018

In maths we will be looking at addition and subtraction as well as looking at shapes. In literacy we will be continuing with RWI for phonics. We will use our phonics skills to help us with some reading and writing activities. Children will also be encouraged to make up their own stories.

For Art Week, our focus will be ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and we will be having the wonderful ‘Moving Words’ team in to give us a great start to the week.

Have a lovely Christmas and a safe start to 2018! See you in the New Year.

Miss Jackson and Miss Murphy

'A King is born!' Early Years Nativity 2017

Here's a group shot of all the children dressed up and ready to sing and dance. We hope you all enjoyed seeing your children perform, they were all amazing, you should be so proud of them all.

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree!

It was time to put up our class Christmas tree. The children put on a bauble each and added some lights and tinsel. Have you got your trees up yet?

St Barts Church

As part of our focus on celebrations and the Nativity, we took a walk up to St Barts Church. We meet Father Michael and he talked to us about the church and how it is used. The children explored the different areas of the church and then we sang a song to Father Michael.

Gingerbread Making Session

Parents and carers were invited in to work with their child to make some yummy Gingerbread Men. It was a great turn out and the whole school has smelt of Gingerbread Men all week! Feedback from everyone was positive and we are hoping to do more sessions like this in the future.

Moving in different ways in PE

In PE this week we moved in different ways along the benches. We had to be a thinkasaurus and come up with our own ideas of now to move. How would you move along the bench?

Remembrance Day - November 2017

Reception and Year 1 took a walk to the Cenotaph on Armley Park. We had been learning all about Remembrance Day and the importance of it. We all took something to put on the Cenotaph to show we are thinking about all the soldiers who fought to keep us safe.

Exploring the weather in the outdoor area

It was a very windy day and I wanted to show the children how the wind could move objects outside. We used ping pong balls on the bench and watched as the wind blew them along. A basket was used to catch the balls at the end. Watch the videos to see how the children came up with their own ideas to move the balls when the wind wasn't blowing!

Autumn fun in the park

Reception and Year 1 took a walk in the park to the cenotaph. On our way back we couldn't resist throwing all the lovely Autumn leaves in the air! Do you like to throw leaves?

Bonfire Night Lunch

We had a special lunch for Bonfire today in school. It was tasty hotdogs or yummy meatball sandwiches. What do you like to eat on Bonfire Night?

Potion Making

After reading Room on the Broom we decided to explore colours and make some potions for the witch. We used powder paints and water to mix a special potion for her.

Foot printing

The children decided they wanted to make foot prints outside. We got some paint and large paper and off they went! They had so much fun but Miss Jackson didn't when she had to wash everyone's feet!!!

Halloween!

Today was Witches and Wizards day and we all dressed up. Look how fab we all look!!

This half term in Reception we are welcoming Miss Turner. She is a student at Leeds Beckett University training to be an Early Years Teacher. Miss Turner will be with us until 15th December 2017.
Exploring Autumn

We had a walk around the playground and park to find signs of Autumn. The leaves were crunching under our feet. We watched leaves blowing off of the trees in the wind and some trees had no leaves left! The leaves were all different colours and we even found some berries!

Autumn fun!!!!

We had so much fun exploring the Autumn leaves in the playground. The children filmed each other throwing them up in the air!

Guide Dogs

We were so lucky today and had a visit from Thelma Wilson and her 2 lovely guide dogs.

Characteristics of Effective Learning

The characteristics of effective learning are how children learn in Early Years. In Nursery and Reception we turned the characteristics into Dinosaurs. We have 'Thinkasaurus', 'Explorasaurus' and 'Tryasaurus'. In Receotion, we have weekly challenges linked to the characteristics. Please take a look at an example.

Early Learning Goals

Children in Nursery and Reception work towards meeting the Early Learning Goals. Staff plan lessons, activities and enhance areas of provision to support children in meeting these goals. All children learn differently and we differentiate our planning to support all children needs and requirements. Please speak to a member of Early Years staff if you would like any more information.

What to expect, when?

This booklet will give you a little insight into how children learn in Early Years and the progress they make. There is a section that will show you how you can help your child at home. Please speak to any member of Early Years staff if you have any questions.
