Patterns

Our topic in Maths is currently patterns. We have been looking at different types of patterns and how to create them. A small group went outside to find patterns in the environment. Then we used chalk to draw patterns on the floor.

We hope you had a lovely Easter and haven't eaten too many eggs!

Next half term we have a little topic of 'Space' and following on from children's interests, we will be reading the story 'Alien's love underpants!' In maths we will be learning all about patterns, 3D shapes and doubling, halving and sharing. In literacy we will be beginning to write simple stories, using 'Whatever next!' as our focus. Phonics will continue and we have 2 groups following the RWI scheme to support our reading and writing skills.

Exploring ice

The children have been interested in the ice we have been finding outside due to the cold weather. We have brought the learning inside and have frozen penguins in colourful and sparkly ice. The children had to find ways to free the penguins. They used wooden spoons, knives, forks and hot water in syringes to try and get the penguins out.

Remembrance Day - November 2017

Reception and Year 1 took a walk to the Cenotaph on Armley Park. We had been learning all about Remembrance Day and the importance of it. We all took something to put on the Cenotaph to show we are thinking about all the soldiers who fought to keep us safe.

Exploring the weather in the outdoor area

It was a very windy day and I wanted to show the children how the wind could move objects outside. We used ping pong balls on the bench and watched as the wind blew them along. A basket was used to catch the balls at the end. Watch the videos to see how the children came up with their own ideas to move the balls when the wind wasn't blowing!

Characteristics of Effective Learning

The characteristics of effective learning are how children learn in Early Years. In Nursery and Reception we turned the characteristics into Dinosaurs. We have 'Thinkasaurus', 'Explorasaurus' and 'Tryasaurus'. In Receotion, we have weekly challenges linked to the characteristics. Please take a look at an example.

Early Learning Goals

Children in Nursery and Reception work towards meeting the Early Learning Goals. Staff plan lessons, activities and enhance areas of provision to support children in meeting these goals. All children learn differently and we differentiate our planning to support all children needs and requirements. Please speak to a member of Early Years staff if you would like any more information.

What to expect, when?

This booklet will give you a little insight into how children learn in Early Years and the progress they make. There is a section that will show you how you can help your child at home. Please speak to any member of Early Years staff if you have any questions.
